"Put Food in the Budget" - a Lenten 'Fast' with a Purpose

PUT FOOD IN THE BUDGET  Lenten Challenge...

More than a dozen of us will be starting our challenge this week on Ash Wednesday.  It’s time to do our shopping!
Above is a photo of the food for two people we got for our 3 days
(or more if we stretch it) of Food Bank Fare.  It is either from the quick sale shelf, or otherwise on Special - pretty well the cheapest.  Biked there.

The Purpose of this Lenten Challenge
As you will have heard, this Challenge has been initiated all over Ontario to draw attention to the plight of those living on Social Assistance.  After paying fixed costs, there is rarely enough left over to pay for healthy food options.  In fact, many are having to supplement their meagre budget by becoming regular clients of Food Banks.  Our overall goal is to pressure the Ontario government to improve S.A. allowances by at least $100 a month.  By joining in with your neighbours on Social Assistance, you will be contributing to this exercise in consciousness raising.  Several other churches (including Ascension) are implementing the challenge during Lent.

Shopping List
To guide your shopping, here is the page that explains the details and the contents of a typical hamper from a local food bank.  Of course, you can adjust and substitute as you see fit.  Most food bank fare has to be preservable and economic.

Sharing the Experience
One important detail:  we would like you to write a short summary (each day) of your eating experience.  You may simply want to write this by hand in a log book.  If possible, we would like you to share this information with others who have accepted the challenge.  To read reports of other Ottawa participants, please log on to:
http://ottawadtmc.posterous.com/?page=4
There are at least 6 pages of responses there.  Very interesting!  Worth reading.
To post your reports, you simply send an email to ottawatmc@posterous.com .
